Volume 5, Number 1, Year 2003

The Fifth Year of the Journal, Sleep and Hypnosis

Mehmet Ycel Agargun M.D

This is the first issue of the Volume 5 of the Journal, Sleep and Hypnosis. As editor-in-Chief, I would say the journal has served as an ideal instrument to establish good relationships among the scientists and researchers both in sleep and hypnosis areas. Five years ago there was a question `is there a need for another sleep or hypnosis journal? or `Do we need Sleep and Hypnosis?` as there were about a dozen of sleep and hypnosis journals then. A new journal would provide a bridge between hypnosis and sleep phenomena, which, for ages, had seemed to be two quite different entities. Thus, we felt the need for another journal that would combine sleep, dream, and hypnosis articles.

Sleep and Hypnosis differs from other sleep, dream, and hypnosis journals in that this journal is interested not only in the application of behavioral/cognitive sciences to the study of sleep and hypnosis but also in psychosocial and socio-cultural aspects of these phenomena. Throughout past four years, multidisciplinary approaches have been particularly welcomed. The basic, applied, and clinical studies have been published. We look forward to new contributions, which will significantly enhance the body of knowledge about sleep, dreams, and hypnosis.

The journal is now abstracted or indexed by several databases including Chemical Abstracts, CINAHL, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, PsychoINFO, PsycLIT, Psychological Abstracts, and e-psyche. We expect that this list will grow in near future.

With this issue, we have made some changes in our editorial board. As an editor, I appointed three new associate editors; Joel Hasan, MD for sleep and sleep disorders; Kelly Bulkeley, PhD for dreams and dreaming; and Steven J Lynn, PhD for hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Patrick McNamara, PhD, is the new book review editor. Didem Sar is managing editor now. She is an excellent manager for the Journal. Lutfu Hanoglu, MD, will help us as production editor. Finally, Hanefi Ozbek, MD, PhD, my colleague in Van, assists me to make important progress in Sleep and Hypnosis. I am grateful to all of them that they kindly agreed to undertake these responsibilities and I wish and feel sure that they will have valuable contributions to the journal.

We believe that, Sleep and Hypnosis will continue to play its important part in promoting scientific enterprise in the realms of sleep, dream and hypnosis. Looking forward to meeting you in many future issues through many years, which hopefully would bring peace and prosperity for all humankind.
